Catch Phrases and Trends in Social Networking
“Word of mouse,” now there’s a catch phrase for you.
I was reading MSN the other day and came across the PCWorld article “Is Facebook Past Its Prime” that asks whether FB would go the way of MySpace in the world of social networking.
PCWorld’s take, predicts that FB is a dying fad that is on its way out in the near future. This is purely based upon “five faults” the author sees with FB and for the most part the article speaks of Twitter as the latest and greatest.
Facebook veterans are defecting to Twitter
People who actually have lives don’t use Facebook
In the real world, people often have good reasons for losing touch with old friends
Having too many friends takes the edge of Facebook postings
After that ’25 Things’ note, there’s not much left to say
Me, I am a Facebook kind of guy, and I think it’s interesting that I recently read another article at emarketer.com about FB and the two couldn’t offer a more differing opinion than what I’ve shared above.
This article spoke to its growth, new users, over the past year, 97% while MySpace (still dominant over FB) at -5%, Twitter was not a player.

But this does bring a question to mind, just how large of an impact do Internet outlets have on public perception i.e. “word of mouse” vs. personal relationships, i.e., “word of mouth” I wonder how many people will read this article; I mean, it is MSN. How many people will look into Twitter as a result, how many will be driven away from FB? One thing is clear: it’s obvious that the internet can reach a much larger group.
“Word of mouse”, how does that compare to “Word of mouth” in a net driven world?

So much PCWorld’s “dying fad,” huh?
