Social Media New Year’s Resolutions

Whether you submit to typical New Year’s resolutions or simply let the calendar turn without hesitation, it’s near impossible to avoid the sense of alleviation that January 1 brings to us. We always embrace a clean slate. A chance to do, undo or redo the things that are most important. There’s no better time to reflect on your Social Media strategy and make necessary resolutions to ensure an effective 2010.

That very phrase, “Social Media Strategy”, is one many struggle with. After all, Social Media is relatively fresh, in the sense of its use and effectiveness for businesses. Social Media itself has been difficult to define, so how do you develop a plan around an intangible assemblage of unfamiliarity?

Because one single strategy will not work for all, I’ve simplified some common questions that, when reflected upon properly, will build a fundamental bedrock:

  1. What is working? – Do it better
  2. What is NOT working? – Do it differently
  3. What aren’t you doing? – Do it now
  4. What aren’t others doing? – Do it first

While brief, these principles can be applied to every one of your Social Media outlets. They are meant to evaluate the core functions and even question the existence of specific actions. They can be applied as a preface to an introductory plan or  as an evaluation to your existing strategy. Answer each of these questions with more questions, specific to your business and existing actions.

If you can answer each question and develop the policy that follows, you’ll have one resolution that may be easier to commit to than that gym membership you just pledged.

What are some of your own New Year’s resolutions for your Social Media strategy?
